Teaching Textbooks 4.0: Homeschool Math for Differently-Wired Families

Last Updated on January 7, 2021 by Ginny Kochis

Homeschool math with differently-wired kiddos isn’t a walk in the park. Fortunately, the flexibility and engagement of Teaching Textbooks 4.0 make it a great math curriculum for the differently-wired.

This post was sponsored by Teaching Textbooks. I received curriculum and compensation in exchange for an honest review.

Homeschool math.

Two words, one terrifying concept that strikes fear
into the heart of every mom homeschooling a differently-wired child.

Because as if homeschooling the differently-wired, in general, weren’t an adventure in and of itself, the math part?

The part where you, the homeschool mom, must teach your child, the
differently-
wired wunderkind, math skills you last
used about the time Blockbuster was still a thing?

The part where you’re explaining everything from place
value to linear equations while grading
and keeping track of five million papers,
fighting distraction and perfectionism and fear of failure, and,
maybe, (if you’re lucky) wrangling a kid who
knows their numbers far better than you?

That part?
It’s agonizing.Terrifying.Dare I say headache-inducing, rage cultivating, academic torture, as well?

Homeschool Math and the Differently-Wired: a Problematic Equation

Yes, I know what you’re thinking: Geez, Ginny. Dramatic much?

Well, yeah. I am dramatic when it comes
to math in my homeschool, and honestly,
I’m betting you are, too. Like me,
 you’ve probably spent
hours at the kitchen table buried
in workbooks and scratch paper
, cajoling, supporting,
and (let’s be real) strongly encouraging your brilliant,
differently-wired kiddo while she slogs through a handful of exercises in math.

For moms like us raising kind like ours, homeschool math can be frustrating and overwhelming.

That’s why you need to check out Teaching Textbooks 4.0.

Teaching Textbooks: A Flexible Solution for Homeschool Math

For 14 years, Teaching Textbooks has taken the stress out of homeschool math. Through straightforward but engaging recorded lectures, Teaching Textbooks is a curriculum offering exactly what it advertises: a comprehensive math textbook capable of teaching and reinforcing math concepts from third grade through Pre-Calculus.

Our family started on version 2.0 (CD-Roms and paper), then graduated to version 3.0 when the program moved online. This fall, we transferred to Teaching Textbook’s application-based version, the much-anticipated 4.0. While the roll-out hasn’t been without a few bugs here and there (what software launch isn’t?) it’s an extra layer of awesomeness to what was already a great curriculum for differently-wired families who want to homeschool math.

If you’re not all that familiar with Teaching Textbooks, it’s probably a good idea to get a basic overview.

Teaching Textbooks is a computer-based homeschool math curriculum with instruction, practice, and assessment all in one. It is a completely open and go, hands-off for mom solution for elementary, middle, and high school mathematics.

How does it work?

Each lesson begins with a brief lecture (roughly four to five minutes) featuring both text and auditory instruction. A slider at the bottom allows your student to slow down, pause, go back or skip forward to make sure he’s got everything down.

A sample lecture from Pre-Algebra, my eldest daughter’s current level. Note the slider at the bottom affording control over lecture speed.

Following the lecture, Teaching Textbooks leads the student to a set of practice problems. The first five are simply that: practice with extra help and guidance. The remaining set (between 20 and 22 exercises) gives your student time to practice on her own. The program keeps track of your student’s progress and allows your student to go back to any previous lesson at any time.

While this all sounds pretty wonderful from the get-go, there are new updates to Teaching Textbooks that make it worth its weight in gold. It has set the standard for homeschool math curricula tailored to differently-wired kids. It is challenging, flexible,
 and perfect for students who
work outside the mold.

Why Teaching Textbooks 4.0 is the Ideal Homeschool Math Curriculum for Differently-Wired Families

You can limit distractions – the ADHD,
 dyscalculia, and dysgraphia family’s dream.

From choosing a muted background
to turning off reactions and buddies,
Teaching Textbooks 4.0 allows differently-wired students
the opportunity to tailor their
 homeschool math experience. You can
keep the focus on the numbers, right
where it belongs.

My 5th grader pointing out a background she found distracting. She eventually went with “Fruity Hedgehogs”.

Your student can easily review previously
taught concepts – a lifesaver for
kids with working memory deficits.

Teaching Textbooks 4.0 does this in two unique ways. The first time a student encounters a new concept outside the lecture and practice problems, the program allows for a hint. Click the button and the narrator gives an auditory and visual reminder of the skill necessary for the concept. In our experience, it’s typically just the push an unsure kiddo needs.

Time out for a hint!

Secondly, at the top of every practice problem is a visual reminder that this concept was first taught in lesson X. Your student can go back to that lesson and review the initial lecture in seconds, all without losing the current work.

There are no physical components to
 the program.

Executive function issues?
You’re home free. No books, no disks,
not even a need for scratch paper or
a grade book. Everything’s in the
 program. Hooray!

The word problems are engaging – perfect
 for clever, easily bored kids.

Say
goodbye to two trains traveling the
same speed to reach separate destinations. In Teaching Textbooks, you’ve got the Do-Nothing Duo calculating what percentage of their day they really spend doing nothing, or the Gargantua family calculating the required square footage for their gargantuan-sized new home.

And also, word problems that make subtle references to Gen X and Millenial Saturday morning cartoons.

You and your student can dictate the
pace at which your math program
functions.

Kids who eat math for
breakfast can move to the next
level any time during the school year for no additional payment.
Asynchronous learners can move back and forth through the lessons at the
pace they need.

There are options for the perfectionist,
the child with impostor syndrome, and the child with high anxiety,

Intrusive thoughts. OCD. The child with
a paralyzing fear of failure. If you have a child who struggles with any of these issues, Teaching Textbooks 4.0 affords the ultimate in flexible accommodations. You can set the number of chances allotted for answering a question correctly, you can allow your child to see evidence of progress for concrete proof of good work, or you can lockdown the grade book completely and keep it hidden from your kiddo. The flexibility allows as much protection or support as you need.

Teaching Textbooks 4.0 has completely changed the
 way we do homeschool math.

It has
taken away the challenges we fear,
the frustrations we loathe, and the rigid expectations we find strangling.

It keeps the focus on educating, engaging, and challenging differently-wired kids.

  1. This is actually very embarrassing to say. I am 50 years old and have dyscalculia. Math skills are absolutely terrible. So I am the one that will be using the curriculum.
